Yup, Breakfast At Tiffany's has never been mentioned in the same breathy sentences as adjectives like iconic and immortal before... but flicking through a magazine lately i came upon the image above again, a picture i've before both studied in awe and walked past a hundred times, since the giant poster hung in my hallway for years. So familiar i am with it, so prevalent it is to modern culture, you'd think it wouldn't quite stir me in the same way, but once again it took my breath away. How striking Hepburn's, or should i say, Golightly's simple outfit of black dress with gloves, topped off with diamond tiara and pearl necklace remains, that in an instant this, what could by now be stale, or at least, fully digested, 50 year old movie still, punched me in the senses for the umteenth time.

Looking hard and precious all at once, his designs are a potent cocktail of stones, metals and gems hand-worked into intricate pieces that have an allure of danger, romance and unholy reverence. I particularly love the gargoyles on these stirling silver rings, and the 'cathedral' rings shown below. William has gained international cult status for his unique style of design, capturing elements of Gothic architecture and the baroque period in objects of worn precious metal.

Stylist Anna may be 'fashion director of "Untitled" Magazine, contributing stylist to several well known publications, consultant for exciting brands, boutiques and designers, as well as designing a range of clothing in Tokyo' (so her website blurb goes), but it was her personal style that first attracted my attention. Part pixie, part living sex doll, with plenty of boob, multicoloured hair & wigs. It seems inspired by babes & bombshells in the vein of Pammy, Traci Lords, Cicciolina & even Barbie, Japanese style (you can see the obvious Fruits influences) and sex shops/wear (PVC, leather & bondage).

Anna has assisted Nicola Formichetti in his work with Lady Gaga (and dare i say some of her style may have just rubbed off on la Gaga, if you look closely, and in turn, just, erm, the entire Western world..), she has recently styled shoots for the legendary Ellen Von Unwerth. One to watch.

I dismissed Christina Hendrix's more than ample cleavage as the work of a surgeon's knife, yet another Hollywood magic-eye, but after seeing these pictures of her looking 100% au natural on the beach, i'm forced to eat my hat. How refreshing it is to see someone in the public eye embrace and not cover up their natural curves, letting it all hang (or in her case, KA-BLAMO!) out, and to be celebrated as such.

It was pictures like these (green Grecian dress) that had me eyeing her in suspicion (and it wasn't just a case of the green eyed monster, either. Oh my bad jokes get better & better...), but what can i say, Ms. Holloway must just be onto some full air suspension underwear i'm unaware of. Jessica Rabbit eat your heart out.

A Single Man

Ex head designer of Gucci, Tom Ford's directorial debut, A Single Man stars Colin Firth as protagonist, as well as my everlasting favourite Julianne Moore in her well polished drunken, messed up in the head 60's playgirl mode. I've never been one for Firth, or English fops in general-Darcy can get bent, but his performance is so powerful, at the tiniest movement of his mouth i saw a thousand emotions. I am yet to see his Oscar winning turn in The King's Speech, but its now next on the list.

Before viewing, it would be easy to presume style over substance, and while Ford certainly delivers all that good stuff, with each extra stylistically polished to the life of them, each set piece beautifully thought out (the attention to detail reminded me of HBO's Mad Men), and even a few supermodels you could spot from Ford's own campaign's, if i were none the wiser, i wouldn't have pegged it as his first directorial foray. Told with love and empathy, you can tell
the 1964 novel by Christopher Isherwood is close to his heart. Highly recommended.

I must, must make myself a long, black figure hugging pencil skirt like Betty Rizzo's. YES.
Worn with shades, shirt & attitude.

What brings me back to Grease time and again? Rizzo.

She might have been a 34-year-old acting the part of a teenager and been less obviously sexy than Sandy – but she’s the real deal. Rizzo is a woman trapped in a conservative 50’s suburban America but steadfastly refuses to be a delicate wallflower. She climbs down drainpipes to meet up with boys, doesn’t feel embarassed by her backseat-of-the-car sexploits with boyfriend Kenickie and holds her own in the aggressive banter.

She is very much at odds with her era. While Sandy chastises Danny for sneaking a slight boob grab, Rizzo is not only up for sex before marriage but doesn’t care who knows it. She is understandably freaked out by her pregnancy scare and is upset with Marti for making it public news, but again rises above the petty gossip. She knows her boundaries, her standards and her expectations.

For many Rizzo might be interpreted as a shameless slut – the oppostite to virginal Sandy in all the wrong ways. But she’s not that easy to pigeon-hole. If she were to bed-hop constantly we might tire of her antics, but Rizzo isn’t looking for sex, she’s looking for the one.

During her pregnancy scare Kenickie asks whether the child is his. She claims that it isn’t to save him grief, yet we know otherwise. Rizzo might not be whiter than white, but she was loyal to Kenickie and when apart from him desperately misses their connection. Their reunion at the end of the film is more touching than that of Danny and Sandy’s, though having thought the worst of her, I wonder that Kenickie deserves her.

It is this vulnerable side to her that Rizzo keeps well concealed. People know her as brash, opinionated and independent but fail to realise the sensitive nature she carefully sheids from a judgemental world. It is during the excellent song There Are Worse Things I Could Do that we get to appreciate the real Rizzo.

As the confident leader of the Pink Ladies, she is comfortable knowing that she might not be perfect, but is true to herself. When Principal McGee wishes the students well at the end of their school career she cites prominent figures whose success her pupils might look to replicate. When she suggests beloved First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, the camera reveals a wistful and inspired looking Rizzo. She’s not looking to be some simpering male accessory or vacuous beauty, but to be a woman respected by many. And when the alternative females are the likes of Sandy, she certainly gets my vote.

What could be more horrific than creating a two-headed dog? What about keeping the severed head of a dog alive apart from its body!

Ever since the carnage of the French Revolution, when the guillotine sent thousands of severed heads tumbling into baskets, scientists had wondered whether it would be possible to keep a head alive apart from its body, but it wasn't until the late 1920s that someone managed to pull off this feat.

Soviet physician Sergei Brukhonenko developed a primitive heart-lung machine he called an "autojector," and with this device he succeeded in keeping the severed head of a dog alive. He displayed one of his living dog heads in 1928 before an international audience of scientists at the Third Congress of Physiologists of the USSR. To prove that the head lying on the table really was alive, he showed that it reacted to stimuli. Brukhonenko banged a hammer on the table, and the head flinched. He shone light in its eyes, and the eyes blinked. He even fed the head a piece of cheese, which promptly popped out the esophageal tube on the other end.

Brukhonenko's severed dog head became the talk of Europe and inspired the playwright George Bernard Shaw to muse, "I am even tempted to have my own head cut off so that I can continue to dictate plays and books without being bothered by illness, without having to dress and undress, without having to eat, without having anything else to do other than to produce masterpieces of dramatic art and literature."

I read the novella that Hellraiser is based on, The Hellbound Heart. I would not suggest it, the movie does a better job with the material. However, it did open my eyes a little more and show the story to be another entry in the many ’80s stories about lives of comfort and excess leading to boredom and people seeking out their own destruction just for something new to experience.

The uncle is bored with all earthly pleasures and begins to explore the box, the woman is bored with her marriage and begins exploring other outlets, and the daughter just toys with the box out of curiosity (though interestingly she makes the previous generation pay for her mistake). You could argue that her whole purpose of toying with the box was not boredom, but to be sure the previous generation’s sins found them out so that she would not have to pay for them.
